When a psychologist, therapist, or counselor must disengage with a client, this letter template can lay out some common reasons for the decision. It also formalized the end of the relationship.
Dear Mr./Ms. Clientname,
It is with regret that I must follow up on our conversation in your last session and formally confirm that I can no longer keep you on as a client of my therapy practice.
When we initially engaged in therapy, you asserted that you would take certain steps and meet certain commitments. Specifically, you were to complete a short weekly Anger Journal without sarcasm or placing blame.
Unfortunately, I have seen very little progress due to your resistance to taking accountability for your actions. Accepting your role in what has transpired is key to healing both yourself and your relationships with others. Instead, we are going in circles, which is a waste of my time and yours.
My decision is non-negotiable. I cannot recommend another therapist at this time.
I wish you the best in the future.
Sincerely,
Your Name
